How long have you lived and been in business in Vero?
I have lived in Vero 38 years. I opened my business in 1986 after a ten year apprenticeship learning the art.
What brought you here?
My wife and I were living in New Hampshire. We came south looking for warmer weather. Originally, we went to Miami and then Fort Lauderdale, but it was so crowded and busy, we started looking elsewhere. We found Vero and just loved it.
Explain what you do in 100 words or less.
I completely design, fabricate, set stones, and finish polish every piece I make. Each one is so individual and unique, that process can take anywhere from two days to more than two weeks. I work with all types of gold and platinum. These days, anything goes. People love two-tone gold, like yellow and white. I am happy to cater to each individual personality and taste. I am a perfectionist, so I want to ensure every piece is made as such.
How did you come to be a gold smith and what qualifications do you have?
As I child, I loved working with my hands. I was always puttering with wood and building things. I have always loved jewelry. I met a German master goldsmith while fishing. He watched me tie all of the knots and work with the rigs and lures on the boats. He saw I was good with my hands and meticulous with detail. He offered me an apprenticeship and became my mentor.
What memorable responses have you had to your work?
I am very proud that in all of my years doing this, I have never had one person refuse my work. People come to me with a vision, but often cannot articulate what they truly want. It is my job to design and cater to that vision, and I am pleased the pieces have always been well received. I have also won the Spectrum Award for North American Goldsmiths four different times, which in this business, is akin to winning a Grammy or an Oscar in the entertainment industry.

What are some of your most popular pieces?
My work is so one-of-a-kind, and everything is so vastly different, it is difficult to choose one popular piece. No two items are alike, which is what sets my work apart from an everyday jeweler. That is largely the beauty of what I do. As a goldsmith, I completely fabricate the pieces.
What is your favorite item in the store right now?
My favorite piece is honestly whatever I am working on at the time. I often wake up with an idea and then create it. It is sort of a dreamlike state in which I am not really sleeping, but not completely awake, and the inspiration will come to me. I sit down to make the piece and it is almost as if I am making it a second time.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Escaping to the mountains of Georgia to decompress.
What celebrity do people tell you that you most resemble?
In my younger years, people used to mistake me for singer Tony Orlando. These days around here, people sometimes think I am Emilio Estefan. I think it’s the beard
(laughing).
If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would it be?
I would be Benvenuto Cellini. He was a famous goldsmith in the 1500s. I love reading about his life and works, because we think so much alike. He was very much a type A perfectionist, as well.
If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?
If Everyone Were a Virgo, Life Would Be Perfect.
What are 5 things you could not live without?
First and foremost, I could not live without my wife. Music is a huge part of my life, as well as my children and granddaughter. I also love wine.
